Semaglutide vs. Ozempic/Wegovy
Let’s compare Semaglutide and
How Does Ozempic Work:
Let’s compare semaglutide and branded Ozempic® and Wegovy®:
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in both the branded medications Ozempic® and Wegovy®, as well as in compounded semaglutide. While they share a similar mechanism of action, only the branded versions are FDA-approved and have undergone extensive clinical testing to evaluate safety and effectiveness. Compounded semaglutide has not been evaluated by the FDA and should only be used when prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider.
Branded versions often cost more due to the investment in research, development, clinical trials, and marketing. These expenses are reflected in the retail price, even though the active ingredient is the same.
Unfortunately, weight loss medications are not typically covered by insurance. As a result, many patients face monthly out-of-pocket costs ranging from $1,000 to $1,500—or must endure lengthy insurance appeal processes.
At Integrity Medical Weight Loss, we support affordable and accessible treatment options for patients who qualify. Compounded semaglutide may offer a lower-cost alternative when FDA-approved medications are not accessible or appropriate.
Disclaimer: Compounded semaglutide is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It is prepared by licensed compounding pharmacies under Section 503A of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and should be used only under the supervision of a qualified healthcare provider.
